IP Week-17 Rationale & Storyboard
Rationale:
Phone addiction is a common problem in today’s world. Limiting phone usage has been a huge challenge for all of us who are trying to have a work-life balance. We use phones for working and entertainment purposes. However, we also have a life outside our phones. How do we balance our lives between work and entertainment using phones and staying with our real lives?
This problem has become more prominent among college students than other age groups. Most college students are at the age that free of parental control compared to when they were younger. However, they also lack experience in knowing what they want or what is their priority in their lives. Their current life stage makes them more vulnerable to the phone addiction problem.
For this problem, I conducted interviews with some students with phone addiction. Based on the interview results, I came up with a problem statement which is college students with phone addiction do not know how to control the amount of time they spend on phones and are especially addicted to social media and entertainment. Some of them may have the awareness to limit the time used on the phone, but they failed to do it.
College student groups need to be reminded to put down their phones and learn to self-regulate. My solution for the problem will be to introduce a device that can help individuals to achieve self-regulation on phone usage through regular reminders.
SelfReg - is a wireless charging dock for smartphones with reminders. SelfReg comes from the word 'self-regulation.' It reminds users to leave the tempting digital world and go back to reality. This device allows users to stay focused on the work at hand or complete their plans for the day. Considering some essential calls and texts need immediate attention, it also allows users to use their phone in a short time for replying to texts and answering calls. If the device detects unnecessary phone usage, the dock will give a gentle reminder by using gentle sound and lighting effects to remind them to put down their phone again.
Ultimately, those college students can be reminded when they use their phones for too long and learn how to self-regulate gradually.
